During Covid 19 Prepare for Online Teaching/Learning with Teachers First . . .

If you sign up for a session that is above your comfort level, you may have difficulty keeping up or trying specific skills demonstrated in the session. Please plan to watch the archived recording after the session to catch up on things you missed.

 A beginner can:

  • Save, name, and locate a saved file on your computer
  • Create a bookmark or favorite in your Internet browser on your computer (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Chrome, or other)
  • Open and use more than one browser tab - and go back and forth between them
  • Join a web site with email verification
  • Find email that was sent to SPAM or Junk mail in your email program
  • Type in a chat tool
  • COPY and PASTE a word, sentence, or passage of text (preferably use Control+C and Control+V or RIGHT-click to do this)


 
An intermediate user can:

  • Find and upload files from your computer
  • Download files - including finding them after download
  • Download and install a plug in or simple program update
  • Find and copy URLs for web-based images
  • Recognize file types (jpg, doc ,xls, etc)
  • Have/manage passwords and accounts on multiple tools, such as twitter, google docs, multiple web tools

 

An advanced user can:

  • Copy and use embed codes in a web page, blog, or wiki
  • Manage more than one email account, such as Gmail with subaccounts
  • Problem solve through simple technology challenges and tools 
  • Navigate or "play" to figure out a new tool without explicit directions  
  • Understand some tech terminology or "geek-speak"-- or can find out what it means!
  • Use or explain about RSS feeds, Twitter, and/or other social networking tools
  • Convert file types
  • Show some knowledge of html (helpful, not required)

The primary purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of grades, and to examine some of the factors teachers consider when assigning final grades with a focus on borderline cases. The sample consisted of 516 American public school teachers, selected via stratified random sample in a major metropolitan school district in the Southeast. I teach math in an independent study "home school" to 4th, 5th and 6th graders. So I actually do have a magic wand at our school . Here's what I do.

I don't teach "math". For two reasons... one is, the word "math" has strong negative connotations even for students in 5th grade. Studies like http://pss.sagepub.com/content/16/3/175.abstract show that girls are especially prone to this... and removing the word "math" can help. The second reason is that for most people, math is less compelling than problem solving. So we teach "problem solving" and many of those problems require math to solve.

I have a weekly class blog, so, if you're interested, you can read it at https://problemsolvingmath.wordpress.com/. My class is far from perfect, but, my students enjoy it and have learned a lot. And I think the blog provides some usable curriculum if you're motivated.

Abstract

The Learning Space Rating System is a tool developed by leading community experts for rating formal learning spaces to determine how well their design affords and encourages active learning. The LSRS includes 50 questions organized into six sections, and colleges and universities use the LSRS as part of updating existing learning spaces and building new ones. The LSRS provides a clear-cut list of items to consider and measure, and it can open discussions internally and externally regarding various approaches to learning and the ways in which spaces can be designed to support those approaches.
The 7 Things You Should Know About... series from the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) provides concise information on emerging learning technologies. Each brief focuses on a single technology and describes what it is, where it is going, and why it matters to teaching and learning. Use these briefs for a no-jargon, quick overview of a topic and share them with time-pressed colleagues.

'Tweens and Enthusiastic Learning . . .

Is Your Tween and Enthusiastic Learner?
Help your child realize that learning is fun and adventurous



"There's nothing like watching a toddler or a preschooler learn something new for the first time. They're enthusiastic, excited, and eager. Sometimes they can barely contain themselves through all the excitement. But older kids can loose their enthusiasm for school and for learning. If you think your child has abandoned his love for learning and no longer sees school or education as an adventure, it's time to make things fun again.
The tips below will help you bring out the enthusiastic learner in your child.
Steps to Encourage a Motivated Learner
Relate to the Real World: If your tween isn't embracing algebra or earth science, it might be because he doesn't see how it could possibly relate to his own life. Explain how the subjects he studies will impact how he sees and interacts with the real world. Provide examples on how geometry can be used to solve everyday challenges, or how the study of a language will be necessary if your child decides to one day study abroad. 
Work in Groups: The younger generation is a very collaborative generation, and they are comfortable and used to working together. Encourage your tween to invite friends over to work on homework. If a teacher allows students to collaborate on projects or assignments, be sure your child participates and helps take responsibility for the final project. 
Make it Visual: Young children love to look at pictures and photos and it helps them learn the material at hand, but older children also respond to visual aids. Power Points are used often in classrooms today, but they are often boring and students can easily be turned off by them. If you want to help your child relate to his studies, help him find visuals, such as photos, or videos. They will help your child connect to the subject at hand, and help your tween make connections that he might not otherwise make.
Have a Little Fun: A teacher who loves the course material will make a class exciting for any student, but your child might not have such a teacher, and if that's the case you might have to be the one who brings the material to life. Museums, newspapers, videos and other resources might help you inject some fun into your child's studies. If your child sees you get excited about learning, that might be enough to make him excited about it, too.
Give Your Tween a Choice: Your older child probably wants to make certain decisions for himself, and that can help him learn a lot. Allow your child to pick his course electives and to decide on his school projects and other assignments. Also, be sure you avoid taking over a project in the hopes that he gets a higher grade, that will only discourage him and cause him to lose interest. 
Show Him that Mistakes Can be Good: If your child is a perfectionist he might get discouraged by a bad grade or by making a mistake on a project or assignment. Teach your tween to understand that mistakes can be very helpful learning tools and that many very bright learners discovered things just by making mistakes. Helping your child understand that mistakes are a part of the path of discovery will help him chart a course for success."
